Coco by Colbie Caillat

Biography
Colbie Marie Caillat (”Kole-bee Kal-lei”) (born May 28, 1985 in Newbury Park, California) is an American pop singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Malibu, California. Her father, Ken Caillat, co-produced Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours and Tusk albums; Caillat recalls being around the likes of Mick Fleetwood and John McVie as a child.

Caillat is noted for her MySpace profile which led her to become the number-one unsigned singer in her genre for four months. Her popularity on the social network was partially due to her song “Bubbly“. Her profile has garnered over thirty-one million plays. For the week of July 17, 2007, “Bubbly” was featured on the iTunes Store as the free “Single of the Week“. The promotion coincided with the release of Coco, her debut studio album. Caillat was also spotlighted by Rhapsody during the 2007 Black Friday Sale at Best Buy.

About the Album “Coco
For Coco, her debut album, Colbie Caillat follows the same formula that made her a star on MySpace: she delivers track after track of fresh, light pop that has just a hint of a tropical undertow and a wealth of upbeat insights.

At only 22, Caillat possesses the insight of someone years older and has a gift for molding those gems of wisdom into finely crafted tunes. Her music feels like a mellower, more optimistic Sheryl Crow, and her sunny-side-up sound is colored with tints of acoustic pop, jazz and soul. However, she manages to avoid sounding naïve or gullible; instead, she comes off as hopeful and effervescent.

Even when she is treading well-worn territory, this California girl manages to find some fresh takes on familiar themes. She proves that with her opening track, “Oxygen,” which puts a new spin on the notion of someone leaving you breathless. Given the breezy beach-inspired sound, it’s easy to fall in love with her sound as she falls head over heels for some unobtainable guy. Sure, we’ve heard this story before — but we’ve never heard it quite like this.
That is the magic that fills every track of this disc.

Caillat writes songs we’ve all lived or heard before, but she has repackaged those thoughts and emotions to create a brand-new experience. On “The Little Things,” she unfolds a love story like a newspaper on a lazy Sunday morning. The song has a great, easy vibe that lures you in and takes you over. For many listeners, “Bubbly” is the song that introduced them to Caillat via the internet. It’s a light, bouncy and happy song that feels like a warm, friendly smile and perfectly captures the feelings of falling head over heels.

Despite her eternal optimism, it’s not all love songs and good times on Coco. On “Midnight Bottle,” she drowns her loneliness and begs the bottle to take her back to happier times. Even in these darker moments, though, Caillat’s music is never dark or brooding. As she clings to the past like a life raft, she seems to have confidence that she’ll paddle her way back to shore and one guesses that, before long, she’ll be enjoying a tropical drink on the beach with a new beau.

On “Realize,” she waits for someone to recognize that she’s the one for him, and on “Tailor Made” it appears that match has already been made. Caillat’s ability to look at love from new angles is refreshing and endearing; whether she is falling in love, looking for it or losing it, she does it with an irresistible charm. The sparse, pained ballad “Battle” is one of her most painful tracks, and it’s one of very few times when her sunny disposition is eclipsed by the shadows of reality.

To wrap up her debut, Caillat delivers the thoughtful “Capri,” an acoustic track to a mom-to-be. Far from your typical fare, this is a warm, sentimental tribute that is bound to make its way onto every baby shower DVD for the next several years.
By the album’s end, one feels less like they’ve discovered a new artist and more like they’ve found a new friend. With talent like this, expect to see Colbie Caillat making lots of friends for years to come.
