The Police

Biography
The Police were pioneers of the new wave of rock music that thundered across the Atlantic from England. Originally, many believed The Police to be nothing more than another punk band, but the group actually had a unique reggae-like sound that no one had heard before. Many bands would try to copy the Police’s style, but none would have the success of this British trio. The band consisted of Sting, Andy Summers, and Stewart Copeland.

The members took the hard route towards a musical career. Before forming The Police, Sting worked as a ditch digger and a teacher. He also played in a jazz band called Last Exit. Stewart Copeland’s father was a CIA agent. Stewart was raised in California where he also attended college. Copeland moved to England in the mid-1970s and joined the rock group, Curved Air.

The band released its first single on the independent I.R.S. label. The label was founded by Stuart Copeland and his brother, Miles. Miles was also manager of The Police. Originally, Andy Summer was not part of the band. Henry Padovani played guitar on Fall Out. However, after the release of Fall Out, veteran guitarist Andy Summer joined the band. Summers was well known on the music scene, having previously played with The Animals, Zoot Money, Neil Sedaka, and others.

In 1978, The Police released its first album, Outlandos d’Amour, which included the single, “Roxanne“. The song did not fair well when it was first released. When the band toured the U.S. in 1978, the group re-released “Roxanne“. In the spring of 1979, the single climbed to No. 12 on the charts. The boys followed that success with “Message In The Bottle,” and soon they were international stars.

The band’s unique blend of jazz, reggae, and rock continued to evolve over the years as The Police increased in popularity. In 1983, the group was one of the world’s most popular. In 1984, the band went on what it called a sabbatical, with each member pursuing a solo career. Sting released a solo album. Summers recorded an instrumental album, and Copeland recorded the score for the movie, Rumble Fish, starring Matt Dillon, as well as the score for the San Francisco ballet’s adaptation of King Lear.

Over the years each member has continued their solo careers. In 2003, The Police were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The threesome played at the induction ceremony, marking the first time The Police had performed publicly in 18 years. In 2007, The Police re-united once again, opening the Grammy Awards on February 11, and marking the band’s 30th anniversary. A Police reunion tour followed after the Grammy gig.
