Will.I.Am - Songs About Girls (2007)
Songs About Girls by Will.I.Am
Biography
William James Adams, Jr. (born March 15, 1975), better known by his stage name will.i.am, is an American hip hop musician, songwriter and founding member and frontman of Black Eyed Peas. He has also his own label called will.i.am music group. He is of Jamaican descent.
Before joining the Black Eyed Peas, Will.i.am attended the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles. In 2001, he began designing his own signature clothing line, i.am, which made its official debut in 2005 at the Magic apparel trade show in Las Vegas.
He shares his moniker with John Coltrane, the jazz saxophonist. In 1971 fellow Saxophonist and fan of Coltrane Franzo King founded the Church of Saint John Will-i-am Coltrane which still worships to this day. The possible connection with the Black Eyed Peas’ vocalist is through the Peas’ producer Sergio Mendes, a jazz aficionado who saw Coltrane play in the early 60s.
In September 2007, will.i.am’s record label Universal Music Group decided on a pilot scheme to reward certain file sharing with cash incentives, including will.i.am tracks from his latest solo album Songs About Girls.
About The Album “Songs About Girls”
The album is actually a concept: the story of a young, hot artist/producer who falls into fame and its temptations and ends up screwing up his relationship with his girl. Wil plans to take this thing the whole way with a accompanying movie and soundtrack but until that achieves lift-off, he’s created a mighty fine album inspired from his real life adventures as a music star.
“Over” is a break up pop-rap which cleverly borrows from an old ELO song. “Heartbreaker” leans heavily on technology for its beats. The entire album is filled with modern-effects and beats and video-game type sounds, from the technotronic, “I Got It From My Mama,” to “Get Your Money” with its ’80s retro, big thumping beat bolstered by a funk rock guitar and a sample of “Body Language.”
Even the showcase for some subtle Snoop Dogg-isms, “The Donque Song,” is pumped up by electro-beats. “Make It Funky” is one of the harder beat tracks in the collection.
“Impatient” is classic chill-out room stuff, bouncing all over the place but in more subdued musical languages. “One More Chance” has the loose, international flavor of the tropics and is a showcase for Wil’s singing style (as opposed to his rapping style). “Fantastic” twists and turns the melody of the Jackson Five’s “I Want You Back” into a truly modern basis for laying beats on top. “Fly Girl” and “Ain’t it Pretty” are about appreciating one special woman, whether she’s “the one” or a potential “one.” Clearly, Wil loves the ladies. But it’s not just flesh and blood type women that Wil is keen to honor on this collection. “S.O.S. (Mother Nature),” is the song Wil.I.Am was inspired to write when Al Gore asked for help from musicians in the fight against global warming.
Wil.I.Am is a hard worker, no matter what discipline he’s working with. I guess now we know where he gets his inspiration from: Wo-m-an. Hear her roar.
